General Information

The UF Carpentries Club is offering a two day Data Carpentry workshop to help the UF community get started learning R and common data management tools such as the spreadsheets, OpenRefine, and SQL. Want to automate some analyses? Have data you're scared to work with in Excel? Want to collaborate effectively with your peers? We were there once too. Come start learning with us.

Our instructors are trained by the Carpentries in evidence-based pedagogy and our materials have been developed collaboratively over years by dozens of contributors. The University of Florida Informatics Institute and the Marston Science Library have generously volunteered space and resources for this workshop in order to advance the skillset of the UF community. The organizers, instructors, and helpers are volunteering their time to help UF, and you!

The international Data Carpentry organization develops and teaches workshops on the fundamental data skills needed to conduct research. Our mission is to provide researchers high-quality, domain-specific training covering the full lifecycle of data-driven research. Our lessons are domain specific, from life and physical sciences to social science and build on the existing knowledge of learners to enable them to quickly apply skills learned to their own research. Our initial target audience is learners who have little to no prior computational experience. We create a friendly environment for learning to empower researchers and enable data driven discovery.

We will cover Data organization in spreadsheets and OpenRefine, Introduction to R, Data analysis and visualization in R and SQL for data management. Participants should bring their laptops and plan to participate actively. By the end of the workshop learners should be able to more effectively manage and analyze data and be able to apply the tools and approaches directly to their ongoing research.

Who: The course is open to all members of the UF community: students, staff, and faculty. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop.

Requirements: Participants must bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating sytem (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on. They should have a few specific software packages installed (listed below). They are also required to abide by Data Carpentry's Code of Conduct.

Setup

To participate in a Data Carpentry workshop, you will need working copies of the described software. Please make sure to install everything (or at least to download the installers) before the start of your workshop. Participants should bring and use their own laptops to insure the proper setup of tools for an efficient workflow once you leave the workshop.
